Book is in good ex-library condition wtih associated markings and attachments; slight compression of spine. Dust jacket is in good condition. Dust jacket condition preserved within new clear plastic non-adhesive removable covering. 'In 1937, when Sir John Reith was Director General of the BBC, and brooded over Broadcasting House like the wrath of God, the smallest hint of scandal was enough to destroy a career there. So when the hysterical wife of the Features Organiser, Tony Clatham, accused him of adultery, and talked of divorce, his days were surely numbered. Unless, perhaps, his wife could be silenced. The next step seems obvious. But now comes the first of several startling twists in the plot of this highly ingenious thriller. There's a murder attempt, but it's the husband, not the wife, who is shot at. In fact, ther are two attempts. But who wants to kill Clatham, and why? Perhaps his second-in-command, Warren: they get on badly together. Now comes another surprise; the murder, not of Clatham, but of Warren's devious secretary, Lavinia Manners, shot dead at Clatham's desk - from a window of the hotel across the road. Was Chatham the intended target? Or were the attacks on him designed merely to confuse the police? The nature of the next surprise we must not even hint at, but it turns the plot inside out. And a complex story has still to unfold; one that involves many real figures of the Thirties, from Mrs Mayrick, the night-club queen, to John Cornford and Giles Romilly, who fought and died in the Spanish Civil War. It's a highly fascinating novel, which delightfully recreates the London of the Thirties, and especially of the BBC during Reith's all pervading presence. John Sherwood started life as a schoolmaster, but served in the Intelligence Corps for the duration of World War II. In 1946 he joined the BBC External services where he remained until he retired in 1973. He lives in the country, in Kent, and now spends a good deal of time on general house repairs, plumbing, gardening, "pulling one's weight in the village", etc; and concurrently with all his other activities he has written 15 novels and a biography of James Elroy Flecker.' 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
