In response to requests and suggestions from those who have adopted this anthology as a sourcebook, Duncan Wu has redesigned it to make it even more useful to the teacher and student.

The main difference in the second edition is the omission of Wordsworth′s Thirteen–Book Prelude in favor of the much shorter Two–Part Prelude, supplemented by well–chosen extracts from the thirteen–book poem. A number of works have been added: Wordsworth′s The Ruined Cottage, The Pedlar, Michael, The Brothers, A Night–Piece and The Discharged Soldier; Coleridge′s The Eolian Harp (1834), Kubla Khan (MS version), This Lime–Tree Bower my Prison (1797 MS version); Keats′ Lamia; Byron′s Stanzas to Augusta, Epistle to Augusta, and Don Juan Canto II; Anna Laetitia Barbauld, Eighteen Hundred and Eleven, and Charlotte Smith, Beachy Head. Editorial materials have been greatly expanded. There is a new, larger introduction, providing a discussion of what Romanticism may be considered to be; a chronology; all author headnotes have been considerably enlarged, and individual lists of books for further reading added. In addition to the first list of contents, two others have been added, one listing contents by author name, the other by theme.
