Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. 1st Edition. A complete history of the technical and decorative development of the watch. Revised and Enlarged Edition, Copyright Cecil Clutton and George Daniels 1979. It includes insight and opinion on the mechanics of watch movements that only an expert like Dr. Daniels could provide. The first edition of this book was published in 1965 and the second edition was published in 1971. This is the 3rd Edition published in 1979 by Sotheby Parke Bernet Publications by Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd. ISBN 0-85667-058-8, Printed and Bound in Great Britain. This is a very large book and measures 9 7/8" x 13 1/2" with 312 pages with the top spine layered in gold leaf. When Watches was first published in 1965 it quickly gained for itself a reputation as the foremost general history of the subject, and although it has been out of print for several years its position has not been challenged. Whereas the first edition stopped at 1830, the modern collector may be interested in watches of any date, up to and including the work of George Daniels himself. The years since 1830 have seen a wide variety of semi-experimental escapements, and Adolph Lange of Glashutte, in particular, contributed usefully and individually to the develpoement of the precision watch. This is a field which attracts the increasingly technical approach of modern collectors and they will find their tastes well catered for in the new edition. Others are attracted by the highly complicated watches, mostly of Swiss origin, of the last hundred years, and the products of the American industry during this period: the finest American watches standing comparison with anything from Europe. On the historical side, the parts played by Ferdinand Berthoud and Pierre LeRoy in France, leading to the precision watch, have been discussed in depth and placed in chronological juxtaposition with the work of John Arnold in England. The number of monochrome illustrations in this new edition has been greatly increased, especially of watches made since 1830. There are also many more illustrations in colour, covering the whole range of the subject and particularly its decorative aspects. THE AUTHORS - The joint authors are even better known as horological historians and writers than they were in 1965. Dr. George Daniels CBE,DSc(HONS),FBHI,FSA, inventor of the co-axial escapement has served as Master of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers and Cecil Clutton has also served as Master of the Company.
