Updated and reorganized to be even more useful, this popular book's twenty-nine chapters divided into six major sections once again provide busy in-service reading teachers the essential tools they need—specific, concrete methods—for diagnosing reading difficulties and determining how to correct them. The authors' easy-to-read language effectively explains what to do in the diagnostic/remedial process; and twenty-four exceptionally thorough appendices offer hands-on tools for doing it. While individual instruction is clearly identified as the ideal, numerous strategies are also offered for both small- and large-group instruction. Locating and Correcting Reading Difficulties is a reading diagnostic and intervention handbook. Organized around the subskills of reading, the book allows experienced teachers to find assessment resources to document a child's strengths and areas of need and find effective instructional strategies to teach missing skills.
New to this edition is a chapter on developing reading fluency. In addition, each chapter has been reorganized. This reorganization presents a definition of the reading skill followed by three sections: a section on assessing the skill, a section on teaching the skill, and a section on how the skill might affect English language learners. The balance of the text consists of Assessment Appendices, which house every classroom assessment tool that a busy classroom teacher needs for screening or monitoring students' literacy progress. Each assessment resource is briefly identified by purpose and offers both the assessment tool for the student and the data collection tool for the teacher.
