Gr. 3^-5. From the author and illustrator of Hopscotch Around the World (1992), here's a look at the game of jacks as played in Hawaii, Texas, and 12 countries around the world. After an introduction to the game's history and basic rules, the book presents each version on a double-page spread with perfunctory information about the country of origin, the name of each game and variations, instructions, and a full-page illustration of local children at play. The softly shaded, colored pencil drawings, brightened with watercolor and gouache, create a series of inviting scenes. Although the children's clothing and features vary from place to place and while some play with stones and others with sheep's knucklebones, the book shows that all over the world children enjoy the same kind of play. A good choice for teachers seeking multicultural games as well as for children who enjoy jacks. Carolyn Phelan
