Everything in Clackmannanshire is dominated by the superb Ochil hills or the River Forth. Starting in Clackmannan, the historic county town, thence to Alloa, one of Britain's first industrial towns, the guide traces the River Devon from the Forth at Cambus, through each of the hillfoots villages, to its source in magical Glendevon. Much of Clackmannanshire's heritage remains unchanged, with sites of national importance, such as four of the finest tower houses in Scotland - Clackmannan, Castle Campbell, Sauchie and Alloa, Scotland's most complete Japanese garden at Cowden, and Britain's only surviving glass-making cone. The guide also reveals surpises, including the great neoclassical Dollar Academy, the 18th-century Lime Tree Walk at Alloa, Gartmorn Dam, mills, early coal and silver mines and other relics of the industrial revolution.
Adam Swan, a native of Dollar, works as a conservation officer for Dundee City Council. An actice member of the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland, he edits the AHSS Magazine and has been national chairman since 1996.
