Description du livre Robert Hale, 1973. Hardcover / Hardback. État : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. First edition. Hardback. Although everybody has heard of Burke and Hare, few know the true facts concerning this notorious pair. Between the end of 1827 and October 1828, 16 people - some of them well-known characters in Edinburgh - vanished. No one thought much about it until a body was discovered in Dr Robert Knox's anatomy school, and a story of wholesale murder began to unfold. William Burke and William Hare and the women who lived with them as their wives were arrested, but by the time the police had made their case only two of the four were put on trial. Of these only one was convicted and hanged. How did the others manage to escape? That is the question the Edinburgh mob and the genteel folk of the New Town asked, and when acceptable answers were not forthcoming they began to take their vengeance on the authorities, and on Dr Knox. Burke and Hare have chilled the spines of generations of Scots; they provided a staple plot for the popular theatre; they inspired Robert Louis Stevenson, James Bridie and Dylan Thomas. To find the truth about them has meant a search through the twilight world of early 19th-century Scotland, when medicine was not quite respectable and its fringe was downright criminal. Illus., Appendix, Bibliog. and Index. 190pp. 8vo. h/back. From the library of crime historian, Jonathan Goodman, with his personal embossed stamp to fep. Nr. F. in Nr. Vg. sl. creased dw. which has several small closed tears to head of sp. A tad 'musty'. Jacket designed by Colin Andrews. N° de réf. du libraire 17970
