Présentation de l'éditeur :
J.M. Synge's “The Playboy of the Western World” is in this edition with three additional plays: “Riders to the Sea”, “The Shadow of the Glen”, and “The Well of Saints”. In The Playboy of the Western World, young Christy Mahon rushes into Michael James Falherty's public house in Ireland's County Mayo with a breathless tale -- he is on the run, having killed his father. The pub patrons and locals are far more interested in raising a glass and enjoying the drama of his story than the murder. It transpires that Christy's father is merely injured, but because of the skill in which Christy has told his story he becomes a town hero rather than outlaw. Many of the town's women attempt to seduce him, including Flaherty's daughter, the barmaid. The Playboy of the Western World shocked critics and audiences with its debut in 1907, pushing the boundary of decency and inflaming Irish nationalist fire. The play was mired in controversy but is now considered a poetic masterpiece.
Présentation de l'éditeur :
The Playboy of the Western World is a three-act play written by Irish playwright JM Synge and first performed on 26 January 1907. It is set in Michael James Flaherty's public house in County Mayo (on the west coast of Ireland) during the early 1900s. It tells the story of Christy Mahon, a young man running away from his farm, claiming he killed his father. The locals are more interested in vicariously enjoying his story than in condemning the immorality of his murderous deed, and in fact, Christy's tale captures the romantic attention of the barmaid Pegeen Mike, the daughter of Flaherty. The play is best known for its use of the poetic, evocative language of Hiberno-English, heavily influenced by the Irish language, as Synge celebrates the lyrical speech of the Irish.
