The wooden writing-tablets discovered at the fort of Vindolanda, near Hadrian's Wall, make an outstanding contribution to knowledge of the history of Roman Britain in the period between AD90 and c. AD 120. Such a concentration of large numbers of tablets at one site is unique and only a handful of wooden leaf tablets written in ink were known before the discovereis at Vindolanda. The Vindolanda Tablets include by far the largest group of Latin letters from the Roman Empire. The present volume contains the first full authoritative editions of the ink texts which were discovered in the excavations carried out bnetweem 1991 and 1994. The editions are accompanied by translations and full commentaries on points of palaeographical, linguistic and historical interest.
