Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - Hadrian came to power at a moment of acute military crisis, demanding instant decisions with far-reaching consequences. He had to stabilize an empire that was dangerously overstretched, realign borders and instigate thorough reforms of the military, legal and economic system. He dedicated himself to this task with tremendous personal energy, travelling through almost all the provinces of the empire in two long journeys that kept him away from Rome for more than half of his reign. In the process he must have met more of his subjects than any emperor before him. He inspected army units and border installations, and met prominent members of the local elites, constantly spreading and refining his vision of what the empire should be. Government business had to be carried out on the move with a constant reception of embassies and delegations and extensive correspondence. In power, Hadrian faced two great challenges, one personal, the other strategic. He belonged to a new elite with strong roots in the provinces, and despite kinship ties, if distant ones, he was only confirmed as heir to the throne through a last-minute adoption by his predecessor, so he continuously had to assert his legitimacy as ruler. Meanwhile, the empire needed to gain inner strength and cohesion, in order to be able to face the many threats to its prosperity and peaceful existence.
