9780718192013: The English Civil War at First Hand

Almost a quarter of a million lives were lost as King and Parliament battled for their religious and political ideals in the English Civil War. England was divided between Cavaliers and Roundheads engaged in bitter struggles from Preston to Lostwithiel, Pembroke to York. Armies were on the march, villages were decimated and great dynasties destroyed: fathers and sons, uncles and cousins were pitted against each other in defence of their loyalties. The civil war led to the execution of a king, the beginnings of sectarian division in Ireland, savage clan warfare in Scotland and the roots of English socialism. Tristram Hunt avoids adding to the many, mostly transitory interpretations of the civil war and instead offers a timeless narrative based on the first-hand accounts of those who witnessed these traumatic events. In doing so he brings out the voices of the civil war generation - those who lost sons, who witnessed massacres and who fought for an ideal. In this book we see their motivations, fears and misery as the horror of war overwhelmed them. From Cromwell's letters to the memoirs of a Roundhead wife the civil war era is brought to life in all its terrible and fascinating glory.

About the Author :

Tristram Hunt is one of Britain's best-known historians. Since 2010 he has been MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central, and in October 2013 was made Shadow Secretary of State for Education. He is a senior lecturer in British history at Queen Mary, University of London, and has written numerous series for radio and television. His previous books include Building Jerusalem and The Frock-Coated Communist: The Revolutionary Life of Friedrich Engels, published in more than a dozen languages.

Review :

Not the book of the BBC2 series, but it is worth mentioning that the author's TV history of the English Civil War attracted 4m viewers, as well as favourable comparison with that other star of popular history on TV, Simon Schama. Only a small proportion of those viewers needs to buy this book to send it soaring up the bestseller lists. This history of a subject not lacking previous narrative treatments uses abundant contemporary sources to bring a sense of immediacy to the civil strife between 1637 and 1652 that gave birth to the mother of all parliaments. Popular history at its best: a hugely important topic brought to life with considerable style by a professional historian in full command of the sources. A surprise bestseller this Christmas?
