Patrick Marnham set out to write an uncritical biography of a very brave man but his research uncovered a far more fascinating and ambivalent figure. It took Marnham from the Provencal village where Jean Moulin spent his childhood, through the scenes of his career and his bohemian life as an artist in Montparnasse, right up to the doctor's room in Caluire where he was sitting when Klaus Barbie's Gestapo burst through the door and where, in 1987, Marnham interviewed the doctor himself. Patrick Marnham was born in Jerusalem, was educated at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and trained to be a
barrister before turning his attention fully to writing. He has been Paris correspondent for "The Independent," a reporter for "Private Eye" and Literary Editor of "The Spectator." His books include "So Far From God: A Journey to Central America" (winner of the 1985 Thomas Cook Prize), "The Man Who Wasn't Maigret: A Portrait of Georges Simenon," (winner of the Marsh Biography Award) and most recently "Dreaming with His Eyes Open: A Life of Diego Rivera." He has lived in Paris for the lasr twelve years and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
