At first Peter isn't keen on his teacher's plan to dig a vegetable garden to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. Then he starts to dig up some interesting things - a huge worm, a big beetle, bits of china, an old coin and what looks like a giant cucumber but turns out to be a lot more exciting!

Michael Morpurgo is widely recognized as a master storyteller, with over 90 books to his name, many of which have been adapted for film and television. He has won numerous prizes and awards for his work, including the Smarties Book Prize, the Writer's Guild Award and both the Whitbread Award and Children's Book Award for his novel The Wreck of the Zanzibar. Together with the poet Ted Hughes, Michael devised and set up the position of Children's Laureate, created to bring attention to the importance of writing for children. He lives in Devon where, together with his wife Clare, he started the charity Farms for City Children 30 years ago. They now run three farms, which are visited by a large number of children each year. Tor Freeman received a degree in illustration from Kingston University in 1999 and went on to become a freelance illustrator. Her very first picture book was a title for Walker: Pet Wash, by Dayle Ann Dodds, and she has since published her own picture book, Rah!. Tor lives in London.
