Indian women spend a few hours each day at the backstrap loom ?a simple apparatus that dates from remote times?making articles of clothing of extraordinary beauty and durability out of cotton, wool, and in more recent times, synthetic fibers. The backstrap loom has many advantages. It requires no special installation, and loom parts are cheap and easily made from local materials. The loom is portable and can be hitched to any tree or house post, in the shade or in the sun, as the weaver prefers. While weaving, a woman can keep an eye on her children or chat with a neighbor. In Guatemala local custom often requires that women dress in a traditional way; deviations from local styles are not acceptable. Woven clothing is not only traditional and more beautiful than commercial clothing but also less expensive and more durable. Detailed instructions are given in this book for the production of twenty-one different articles of traditional clothing. The authors of Guatemalan Backstrap Weaving have lived with Indian families in the highlands studying and practicing weaving techniques, collecting textiles, and recording every aspect of the weaving process in superb color and black-and-white photographs. Some of the weaving procedures have never before been described in print. All are explained here step by step and abundantly illustrated with photographs and cross-sectional diagrams so that even the more complicated techniques may be clearly visualized and easily understood. This handsome and unique study will appeal to all weavers and students of Central American culture. Since the materials for both the loom and the weaving are easily assembled, any reader may become a backstrap weaver with this book in hand. [The Authors] Norbert Sperlich and Elizabeth Katz Sperlich are professional weavers and photographers. They have traveled extensively in South America and live at present in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
