It means, for instance, knowing when to use dialogue and when to summarize discourse, learning how to use adjec- tives and adverbs that is, sparingly and concentrating on the specific rather than the vague and abstract. It means anchoring your story in a par- ticular time and place; beginning writers often neglect to supply basic and crucial information: Who are these characters? Where are they? When is this story taking place? Thinking like a writer is more complex, because it involves the uncon- scious. You can rely just so much on your five senses; after that you must call on curiosity, imagination, and skepticism-an open attitude not to be confused with cynicism.
