Louis, son of the exiled Napoleon III, Prince Imperial, the probable future ruler of France, was killed in action with Zulu warriors while serving with the British Army in June 1879. Among those who mourned his death was Queen Victoria. The death was the sensation of 1879 and had ramifications for the reputation of the British Army. A scapegoat was found, Captain Jaheel Carey, who commanded the unit the Prince served with. The records of his court martial were destroyed, with an embargo of 100 years placed on its findings and recommendations --- not the usual 30 to 50 years. The author researched his subject for eight years to track down the facts of this military "hush-up." His findings were that had circumstances been otherwise Captain Carey may well have emerged a hero from the action in which the Prince died, rather than face court martial, A fine examination of a little known "sensation" from the Zulu Wars. 240 pages including two appendices, bibliography, index, eight b/w portrait photos, four b/w art illustrations. few small intext maps.
