Biographie de l'auteur :
Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593) was born in Canterbury the year of Shakespeare’s birth. Like Shakespeare, he was of a prosperous middle-class family, but unlike Shakespeare he went to a university, Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he received the bachelor’s degree in 1584 and the master’s degree in 1587. The terms of his scholarship implied that he was preparing for the clergy but he did not become a clergyman. Shortly before he received his M.A. the University seems to have wished to withhold it, apparently suspecting him of conversion to Roman Catholicism, but the Queen’s Privy Council intervened on his behalf, stating that he “had done her majesty good service” and had been employed “in matters touching the benefit of the country.” His precise service is unknown. After Cambridge, Marlowe went to London, where he apparently lived a turbulent life (he had two brushes with the law and was said to be disreputable) while pursuing a career as a dramatist. He wrote seven plays--the dates of which are uncertain--before he was yet again in legal difficulties: he was arrested in 1593, accused of atheism. He was not imprisoned, and before his case could be decided he was dead, having been stabbed in a tavern while quarreling over the bill.
Présentation de l'éditeur :
Marlowe’s stage play adaptation of the classic German folk legend, Dr. Faustus is a familiar tale of hubris and damnation. It centers on none other than the eponymous Dr. Faustus, a man who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for wisdom and power. While Faustus’ pact with Lucifer earns him the services of Mephistophilis, a lesser demon, Faustus ultimately squanders these services and is blinded to several opportunities for salvation. One of the most familiar and popular iterations of the classic “deal with the devil” motif, Dr. Faustus remains an intriguing and surreal work that still inspires controversy to this day.

Description du livre Softcover. Etat : New. First Thus. On 30th May 1593 Christopher Marlowe was stabbed to death in a tavern brawl after a dispute about the 'recknynge' He was 29. His best known play, Doctor Faustus, was probably first performed in 1590 or 1591, but the first extant edition was not to appear until 1604. It was published again in 1616 in an expanded version now thought to have been debased by the extensive commissioned additions of two contemporary hack writers. Almost all subsequent editions have followed the second or 1616 edition, the B-text, or have attempted an inconsistent synthesis of the two. This new edition, however, conforms to the findings of the most recent Marlowe scholarship, and is based upon the shorter 1604 edition, or A-text, which is now generally agreed to be much closer to Marlowe's original draft.
