Ann has been working in the Lifelong Learning Sector since 1983 and is currently teaching at Bishop Burton College in East Yorkshire. She has her own educational training consultancy Ann Gravells Ltd which specialises in teaching, training and quality assurance.
She began her career as a hotel receptionist and then progressed to training new staff on the job. She was approached by a college to teach the Hotel Reception course on a part time basis and this began her teaching career. A few years later, after gaining the necessary qualifications, she began teaching full time and also delivered staff training programmes. Ann's role brought her in to contact with many City & Guilds' External Verifiers and soon became one herself. This gave her the opportunity to become involved with the development of the new teacher training qualifications in 2006. It was during this time she had the idea for a textbook to support new trainee teachers, written in plain English and at a level to suit anyone new to the subject.
The book Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) became a bestseller and is now in its 5th Edition. Ann has since written and co-written several other textbooks.
Throughout her career Ann has kept up to date with her own professional development and has achieved a Masters Degree in Educational Management, a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, and a Degree in Education as well as Management, and Learning & Development qualifications. Ann is a Fellow of the Institute for Learning, holds Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status and is a Licentiate of City & Guilds.
Ann achieved a Medal of Excellence for Teaching at Bishop Burton College in 2007. This medal was presented to Ann by Ed Balls. One of her students was the first in England to achieve the PTLLS Award. Ann has co-written the International teaching qualifications for City & Guilds, and delivered events in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Hong Kong.
