9780863157943: Rosalind and the Little Deer

Rosalind loves to play with her little deer in the shade of the lime tree. Then one day a hunter comes along with his dog and frightens the deer away. The poor little deer is captured by a king and kept in a golden cage, but it refuses to eat.

People come from far and wide, bringing delicious food for the king’s prized pet, but still the deer won’t eat. Then the hunter and his dog pass by and send a message back to Rosalind. Can Rosalind persuade the mighty king to part with his pet and set the little deer free once more?

This classic Elsa Beskow tale is published now for the first time in English. With its traditional fairy-tale charm and beautifully detailed illustrations, this is Elsa Beskow at her best.

About the Author :

Elsa Beskow (1874-1953), born Elsa Maartman in Stockholm, was a pioneering author and illustrator of children's books in Sweden―perhaps the best known of all Swedish children's book artists. Her books were inspired by her own childhood experiences, as well as those of her six children. Central themes were the relationships between children and adults and children's independent initiative. Her books are continually reprinted, and many have become classics. She also illustrated ABC books and songbooks for Swedish schools.

From Booklist :

First published in Sweden in 1924 and now available in English, this picture book features a simple but exciting story. A girl named Rosalind sleeps under a linden tree near her friend, a little deer. Frightened by a hunter, it runs away and encounters the king, who decides to keep it in a golden cage. The sorrowful deer refuses to eat until Rosalind comes, and once she arrives, she refuses to leave without her friend. The king locks them both up in the cage, but the hunter frees them. In the happy ending, Rosalind and her deer dance around the linden tree to the music of his horn. While kids will relate to the story of a child rescuing her animal friend, a summary of the plot does not entirely explain the book’s charm, which has more to do with the combination of sweetness, gravity, and grace in both the text and the illustrations. Children beguiled by Beskow’s Princess Sylvie (1934, 2011) will want to make Rosalind’s acquaintance. Preschool-Grade 2. --Carolyn Phelan
