Description du livre Trade Paperback. Etat : Very Good. 252 pages. Originally published in 1966, this book has been recognized as a classic case study as well as a daringly compassionate portrait of a man consumed by self-loathing. Author's third novel, originallly published in 1966 it is a study of a mind turning on itself., probing its dark recesses and inner limits and finally exploding in horror, rage and madness. Earl Summerfield is an obscure petty civil servant whose work for the State Employment Bureau in San Francisco is a dreary mixture of maddening bureaucracy and water-cooler politics. His marriage has drifted into indifference and hatred. His diary starkly records the fluctuating contempt for others and apologetic self-hatred of inward retreat. He becomes obcessed with Mara St. John, a young beauty queen and socialite. Slowly his dark fantasies take shape in action as he follows women in the street, brushes against them in elevators, prowls backyards, and finally stalks Mara with diabolical concentration. A deeply disturbing harrowing study of a diseased mind. N° de réf. du vendeur 5532

Spurned by his wife at home and by superiors at work, a young man sits in his cramped San Francisco apartment during the turbulent 1960s and channels everything around him into a diary that is a perfect record of a world going to pieces. Spurned by his wife at home and by superiors at work, a young man sits in his cramped San Francisco apartment during the turbulent 1960s and channels everything around him into a diary that is a perfect record of a world going to hell. This is the diary of a rapist. It is also an exploration of the degenerating thought patterns of this man's mind. The first thing one notices about this work is the lack of abject sexuality.there are no long erotic dream sequences, no detailed review of violent acts, no endless explorations into kinky sex. Our main character (I refuse to use the term "anti-hero") thinks of himself as a witty bon vivant who should have the power to mesmerize a certain woman. You discover midway that at some point he abused this woman and is now taunting her. Then he begins to unravel and slowly descends into madness that we view through his increasingly obscure diary entries. Fascinating read. N° de réf. du vendeur 43122
