Haniel Long is a legendary, though obscure, figure in American literature. At one stage he was so highly regarded that the Encyclopaedia Britannica ranked him with Whitman and Emerson. Born in Rangoon, Burma, in 1888 he was brought to the USA at the age of three and attended Harvard University (where he worked with T.S. Eliot on the 'Harvard Advocate'). After working as an academic and publishing volumes of poetry Long moved to Santa Fe in 1929 and worked as a literary editor and publisher.

The Marvellous Adventure of Cabeza de Vaca was written during the Great Depression and is regarded as Long's seminal work. His place in American literature is similar to that of Robinson Jeffers, essentially religious and regional writers, while other writers have compared him to Robert Frost. Haniel Long died in 1956.

In November, 1528 a group of Spanish soldiers are washed ashore in the Gulf of Mexico. The leader of the expedition was Cabeza de Vaca and he would spend eight years travelling across North America, enduring starvation and enslavement, to return to his home. Based on a true story, but effused with the Haniel Long's poetry, this novella is comparable to Khalil Gibran's 'The Prophet' in its understanding of what men can do when they must do something or die. It is a testimony to mankind's ability to help each other. Also included is Long's 'Malinche', the story of a slave girl who served as Cortes's translator during his conquest of Mexico. Long's gifts as a poet bring a magical quality to the telling of her story. Malinche comes to embody the image of the ideal woman that all men carry in their hearts.
