Description du livre Morgan & Morgan, Inc., Dobbs Ferry, New York, 1978. Cloth. État : New. Etat de la jaquette : Near Fine (-). James Van Der Zee Photogrphs (illustrateur). First Edition. (x) 86 pp. Foreword by Toni Morrison (1 p.), Introduction by Camille Billops, Illustr. text, 28 Full page sepia photo reproductions, Description of plates. This volume features 28 reproductions of Van Der Zee's exceptional memorial photographs of recently deceased African Americans of all ages, usually in coffins ( in especially poignant images, a few infants are shown being held by their parents). Included is a photo of Van Der Zee's own 16 year old daughter Rachel, a victim of appendicitis. The photographs were reproduced by a fine-screen process called Quadradot Lithography. Interspersed among the photographs is the transcript of an extensive conversation between the 91 years old Van Der Zee and Camille Billops that provides many insights into his career, burial conventions in Harlem, and attitudes of family members towards death (approx. 30 pp.). Also included are over 20 poems by Owen Dodson. Author Toni Morrison's introductory statement more than adequately characterizes his memorial photographs, "How living are his portraits of the dead". A F/N, unused HC 1st edition copy. In a NF DJ with a small crease at bottom edge of rear panel, and a hint of age tanning to top edges of both panels, otherwise as new, bright and unblemished. DJ now elcosed in an archival mylar protective cover. PV0008g Size: 10 3/4 x 9 1/4 Inches. N° de réf. du libraire 10-903094
