The end of the U.S.-Soviet standoff and the increasing risk of political adventurers such as Saddam Hussein developing nuclear capability have profoundly altered the shape of global nuclear danger. In Reducing Nuclear Danger, three of America's top experts on nuclear affairs offer a thoughtful prescription for effective international action to cut existing nuclear arsenals and to prevent further proliferation. They argue that the United States must take a cooperative leadership role to achieve worldwide control of nuclear weapons. The immediate tasks to this end are to execute the already agreed-upon reductions in U.S. and Russian forces, ensure that Russia remains the only nuclear state of the former Soviet Union, and substantially strengthen the international efforts against the spread of nuclear weapons. The authors favor adopting a strict doctrine of using nuclear weapons only as a "defensive last resort, " along with other specific changes in current policy. Prominent in their prescriptions is an eventual drastic reduction of the current Russian-American warhead ceilings. They also advocate a new policy for American leaders - toward other nations as well as the American people - of open public explanation of nuclear danger. This important and insightful book on the current nuclear danger should be read by all citizens with an interest in resolving what remains our greatest global risk, at a time of unprecedented opportunity.

Sidney David Drell (September 13, 1926 - December 21, 2016) was an American theoretical physicist and arms control expert. He was professor emeritus at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) and senior fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution. Drell was a noted contributor in the fields of quantum electrodynamics and high-energy particle physics. The Drell-Yan process is partially named for him. Drell was active as a scientific advisor to the U.S. government, and was a founding member of the JASON Defense Advisory Group. William James Crowe Jr. (January 2, 1925 - October 18, 2007) was an admiral who served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and as the ambassador to the United Kingdom under President Clinton. McGeorge "Mac" Bundy (March 30, 1919 - September 16, 1996) was an American expert in defense policy, serving as United States National Security Advisor to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. He was president of the Ford Foundation from 1966 through 1979. In 1953 as its youngest dean worked to develop Harvard as a merit-based university. He also served as a scholar in residence at the Carnegie Corporation. This eminent trio of authors has written an important book. It provides a remarkably cohesive and edifying perspective on the U.S.-Russian nuclear relationship, the global scourge of nuclear proliferation, and the future role of nuclear weapons in international affairs. The authors establish a solid basis for U.S. leadership in reducing the world's reliance on nuclear weapons. Reducing Nuclear Danger reflects creative thinking disciplined by realism and prudence, and appreciation for the critical importance of global cooperation in making effective policy. It clarifies core principles and provides practical directions that should appeal strongly to a wide audience. The authors warn against complacency. New dangers have emerged, mainly in the form of nuclear proliferation within and outside the former Soviet Union. N° de réf. du vendeur 35757
