The primary focus of Judith L. White's life has been on family; helping her husband through engineering and law schools, mothering their three daughters, parenting foster infants prior to their adoption and caring for her parents when the need arose. Now she embraces their four grandchildren. Compiling the family stories she heard when growing up was a warm and joyful journey. Her other writing efforts are poetry. Dr. White's educational pursuits include a Bachelor's degree in speech pathology from the George Washington University, a Master's degree from the University of Maryland and a Ph.D. from Walden University (Research Advisor: Dr. I. King Jordan, President: Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.; the only liberal arts university in the United States for deaf and hard of hearing students). Currently, Dr. White was the Director of Judith L. White & Associates, a Speech & Language Rehabilitation Agency in Potomac, Maryland. In 1995, glancing through her mother, Mirm's, old papers, Judy White discovered a cablegram sent by her grandmother to inform her children of their father's death with the curious postscript, Don't tell Miryam. Why her mother's nine siblings had been instructed to keep the secret from her, White never knew. But the cablegram confirmed an old story White's mother had often told her one of many. Mirm had loved telling funny, charming tales of the mishagos (craziness) of growing up in her large Orthodox Jewish family. Inspired by her discovery of authenticating documents, White decided to explore her remarkable heritage. Silverstone Stories and Other Mishagos compiles not only Mirm's memories, but the whole family's cherished history. Spanning nearly a century, these sometimes rollickingly funny, sometimes sad tales depict ten brothers and sisters who, though often separated, nonetheless retained a firm grasp of what it truly meant to be a member of the Silverstone family. The Silverstone Stories begin with Rabbi Gedaliah, White's grandfather, who came from Ireland in 1901 to accept a rabbinical position in Washington, D.C. There, he helped found and lead the Tifereth Israel Synagogue in Northwest and wrote thirty-eight scholarly tomes, which he continued to print in new editions even after his 1937 migration to Eretz, Israel. He remained there until his death in 1944. From a grandmother who sold ceremonial wine from her basement during Prohibition, to a Rabbi uncle who accidentally complimented his future wife on her bra, White's relatives make up a colorful cast of characters. Their stories not only entertain, but offer many insights into the culture and traditions of Judaism. Silverstone Stories and Other Mishagos enchants us with the fascinating idiosyncrasies, trials, and deep affection that govern family life. N° de réf. du vendeur 85452
