An academic at one period of his life during which he mixed with the likes of Alfred Douglas, Andre Gide, Thomas Mann, Thornton Wilder, Gertrude Stein, and Alice B. Toklas, Samuel Steward (1909-1993) later became a tattoo artist using the name Phil Sparrow. Through this he became an unofficial collaborator with Dr. Alfred Kinsey, advising on the sexual motivations for tattooing. Later still he wrote gay hustler novels under the pseudonym Phil Andros.
