Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. Tyrrell, Barbara (illustrateur). 4th Edition. Barbara Tyrrell (1912-2015) was painter and illustrator who documented tribal people of South Africa. Her father and grandfather had both occupied posts as interpreters between England and various African tribes, and her exposure to the Zulu world became her main source of inspiration in art. Tyrrell trained at the former University of Natal in the 1930s, and used her education and deep ties with Zulu tribal members to begin to record the disappearing daily life and ceremonial dress of the South African tribe. Tyrell's work remains among the most important historical documentation of tribal life in Southern Africa. The book contains both B&W and full color illustration of tribal costumes as well as description of the meaning by tribe of wearing these costumes. Foreword by George G. Campbell, Chancellor of the University of Natal. An essential volume for every Africana library. Hardcover has white cloth boards covered with full color illustration and with black lettering, but no DJ. Cover shows rubbing and spine is sunned. Interior is tight, clean and unmarked.
