This first-person account tells how author Amy Racina survived for four days and nights, both legs badly broken, in a remote valley in California’s Sierra mountains after a sixty-foot fall during a solo hiking trip. The book chronicles her miraculous rescue, heard by chance by a man who was partially deaf. It describes her dramatic airlift out of the canyon, swinging helplessly from two straps, dangling fearfully beneath a helicopter high above the ravine where she had lain.

Amy Racina was born in 1956. She has traveled all over the world by herself. Introduced to backpacking at 16, Amy began soloing in her early twenties. She has trekked hundreds of miles through the wilderness that she loves, especially in the high country of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range and particularly in Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Parks.
In addition, she has founded several ongoing women’s circles, been instrumental in shaping a number of online and in-person communities, and led groups of people in wilderness experiences. She is articulate and genuine, inspired by her own story and eager to talk about her experience of wilderness survival chronicled in her book Angels in the Wilderness (AngelsInTheWilderness.com).
She has worked for two decades as a freelance graphic artist, involved primarily in package design and advertising, and marketed some of the products she designs. She has received numerous awards for her design work, including a Clio nomination.
Just nine months after a near-fatal fall, Amy headed again for the wilderness with her pack, backpacking once again. The medical professionals who had treated her were amazed, but people who knew her were not. They had no doubt that she would defy the odds and hike once again in the wilderness she loves.
