Biographie de l'auteur :
Dean Metcalf is a US Marine Corps veteran who served four years: in Vietnam, Okinawa, Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan, South China Sea, and the Gulf of Tonkin. After leaving the service with an Honorable Discharge, he studied at Colorado College, majoring in Philosophy and Political Science. He graduated Cum Laude in 1969, studied Advanced Russian Language that summer in Leningrad, and in the Fall entered University of California at Santa Cruz in the History of Consciousness Program, pursuing a Ph.D. In the Spring of 1971, a post-combat nightmare (Dream: A6 and Wolves, RATTLESNAKE DREAMS, p. 311) blasted him out of graduate school and onto the road. He drifted to the Oregon coast, working as a deck hand on albacore boats, then returned to grad school and was advanced to Doctoral Candidacy in June, 1972, then quit academia again. Worked 30 years as journeyman carpenter and general building contractor. Trained in martial arts about 22 years, and founded Wallowa County (Oregon) Tae Kwon Do Academy. He has also worked as a wildland firefighter in Oregon, 2001-'02. Between jobs, for the last 19 years, he has been writing RATTLESNAKE DREAMS, his memoir of service in Vietnam, and of journalism in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Israel, the West Bank, Gaza, Leningrad, Moscow, Baku, Kiev, Prague... always trying to understand why we go to war. This book is the result of that experience, and that study. It was written in the hope of keeping at least one, or a few, of the young ones alive.
Présentation de l'éditeur :
RATTLESNAKE DREAMS is my memoir. It begins in the Vietnamese village of Tho An, in April 1966, which my company of Marines is burning. I was guarding a group of women and children, and one old man. One child, a baby boy, is screaming louder than the explosions of grenades and machine guns going off all around me. That long moment - that very long moment - changed my life forever. That baby boy, and his mother, and the other women of his family, have been my teachers since that day. Since that moment, my life has consisted in studying what happened to me that day, and what has continued to happen to me in the 40+ years since: journalism travels in Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Israel, the West Bank, Gaza, the Soviet Union, Prague, Eastern Europe... This book is the result of those travels, and studies in Leningrad, Colorado College (Cum Laude 1969), and graduate studies in the History of Consciousness at University of California, Santa Cruz. It was 19 years in the writing.
