For every reader, One Small Mistake is a thoughtful reminder. All of us over twenty-one can probably recall, in this moment of reflection, that one misstep … mishap, error of judgment, foolish act or word, or hasty immature decision in our past, that still finds us in the dark on sleepless nights. Sometimes an old song takes you back to a point in the past, or perhaps the smell of freshly-mowed grass in the spring reminds us of the hope of our youthful years. The book begins with a golden family, and we all know one of those. They seemingly have everything. Their lives are torn apart by one of the scourges of our planet, child pornography. This is a timely subject. It is a thriving, booming worldwide business and is interconnected with human trafficking. These subjects are enough to make us all ponder the word “mankind.” It’s difficult to align those words, “man” and “kind,” in a conversation about how these horrors are pervasive, like cancers eating at our planet, as if disease and wars were not enough already. This book is a caution to all of us that we should weigh our words, our actions, and the desires of our hearts. It is also testimony to forgiveness and understanding. The backstory of One Small Mistake takes the reader into the life of a young woman who is tortured by her memories. Forgiveness is not the hardest part. Forgetting is. There are many situations and occurrences in the young woman’s life that are the stories of my life. There are also many small stories incorporated that were passed down to me by a beloved grandmother, who had seen everything, endured and suffered and still stood, beaten and battered by the world, and who is surely enjoying her children and grandchildren in Heaven at this moment. Those are true stories that still astound me.The story should give us all courage and hope. Life is indeed a circle. What goes around, comes around. For every horrible thing that happens, there is some good being done in the world, somewhere. We are all on a journey of pain and joy. Everything in life that is worth having is hard to come by. Even love, the most precious thing of all, requires sacrifice. I hope my first attempt at writing will elicit self-examination, and be a reminder that yesterday is gone. I avoided descriptive passages regarding child porn and there are very few instances of bad language. We hear enough of that every day, and I wanted to write something that ladies would enjoy reading and could discuss with their friends. This is not a romance novel, but it is a book about learning to love and trust. It is not lighthearted and flimsy, but I can promise a happy ending. Somewhere in the darkness, my friends, a candle is glowing, guiding you home.
