Variation studies is an increasingly popular area in linguistics, becoming embedded in curriculum design, conferences, and research. Benedikt Szmrecsanyi is Professor of Linguistics at KU Leuven (Belgium). His research interests include language variation and its interfaces with typology, geolinguistics, complexity theory, and psycholinguistics.

Jason Grafmiller is Assistant Professor of Corpus-based Sociolinguistics at the University of Birmingham (UK). His research involves the application of various quantitative techniques to examine the forces shaping how language varies across regions, styles, and time.
