9781137298942: Haunted Seasons: Television Ghost Stories for Christmas and Horror for Halloween (Palgrave Gothic)

This book explores the literary and cultural history behind certain Christmas and Halloween traditions, and examines the way that they have moved into broadcasting. It demonstrates how these horror traditions have become more domestic and personal, and how they provide a necessary seasonal pause for reflection on our fears.

About the Author :

Derek Johnston is Lecturer in Broadcast Literacy at Queen's University, Belfast, UK. His research focuses on British broadcasting history and on the history of genres such as science fiction and horror, particularly where the two combine.

Review :

"This book is filled with historical detail about ghost stories, gothic, horror and television, as well as insight into the cultural meanings of these traditions. Haunted Seasons is an original and significant addition to a growing body of work on television horror. It, also, offers a distinct approach to television, by focusing not on serialised drama or regular programming, but singular television movies, events or 'specials' that invite us to see the world through fresh, sometimes haunted, eyes. This book is ideal for the television and horror scholar but also for anyone who enjoys a brief, seasonal, sojourn into the ghostly and the macabre." (Stacey Abbott, BUFVC Viewfinder, 2016)
"A long-standing Christmas tradition of my own, and presumably one for many other British readers, has been the trawling through and annotation of the seasonal Radio Times. Johnston has obviously carried out a more learned, longitudinal variant on that oddly nostalgic ritual, but one of his main achievements here is to shed light on how scheduling and seasonal habit can be of as much cultural and social importance as the act of storytelling itself." (James Leggott, Critical Studies in Television, 12:1, March 2017)

“This book is filled with historical detail about ghost stories, gothic, horror and television, as well as insight into the cultural meanings of these traditions. Haunted Seasons is an original and significant addition to a growing body of work on television horror. ... This book is ideal for the television and horror scholar but also for anyone who enjoys a brief, seasonal, sojourn into the ghostly and the macabre.” (Dr. Stacey Abbott, BUFVC, December, 2016)

“Derek Johnston’s Haunted Seasons, which comes as a welcome ... addition to the literature on the gothic, the supernatural, and our media landscape ... . Johnston’s work excavates a fascinating history of these seasonal hauntings, locating them within the role that seasonal days like Christmas and Halloween play in the lived experience of communities on both sides of the Atlantic. ... This material is welcome in its own way, especially for an uninitiated reader ... .” (Murray Leeder, Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror Studies, Issue 15, 2016)

Description du livre Palgrave Macmillan. Hardcover. État : New. Hardcover. 224 pages. Why do the English have ghost stories at Christmas Why does US television have special Halloween episodes Is this all down to Dickens, or is it a hangover of an ancient, pagan past Why does it survive Haunted Seasons explores these and related questions, examining the history and meaning of seasonal horror. It reaches back through archaeological evidence of ancient beliefs, through Shakespeare, and Victorian ghost stories, and the works of M. R. James, and onwards to radio and television. The broader genre of supernatural television is considered in relation to the irruptions of abnormality into the normal, along with the significance of time and the seasons in these narratives and their telling. Particular focus is placed on the BBC Ghost Story for Christmas strand and the Halloween episodes of The Simpsons to help us interpret the continued use of these seasonal horror stories and their place in society, from fireside to television. This item ships from multiple locations. Your book may arrive from Roseburg,OR, La Vergne,TN. Hardcover. N° de réf. du libraire 9781137298942
