This edition differs from the third in nothing except in the addition of a newS ection, explaining theE ffects ofF reeT rade upon the Value of Money. Mr. Tooke has shown, in the most satisfactory manner, that when the quantity of money remains the same, taxation cannot raise general prices. It follows, as a necessary consequence, that that advance in general prices which experience proves to be a consequence of taxation, must be accompanied by an increase in the quantity of money. The manner in which taxation increases the quantity of money, I have, in this edition of theE ssay on the Corn Trade, endeavoured to explain.
