This little book is an attempt to present in a concise yet clear form the methods of gas and fuel analysis involved in testing the efficiency of a boiler plant. I ts substance was given originally, in the form of lectures and heliotyped notes, to the students in the courses of Chemical, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering, but in response to requests it has been deemed expedient to give it a wider circulation. At the time of its conception, nothing of the kind was known to exist in the English language; in German we now have the excellent little book of Dr. Ferdinand Fischer, Taschenbuch fur Feuerungs Techniker. The present book is the result of six years experience in the instruction of classes of about one hundred students. It is in no sense a copy of any other work, noris it a mere compilation.
