Prefatory Note. This thesis should be read in the same manner as an impatienjt novel-reader peruses fiction. The last chapter ought to be read both first and last. Economy of space alone forbids us to print it twice. After reading the summary, those philologically inclined will find more of interest to themselves in the latter half of the thesis. The tabulated analyses and summaries ,found generally at the end of the chapters, will give a comprehensive conception of the system, and are hence the most important parts of the text.
