PRBFACE TO THE GERMAN EDITION.
Had I alone been concerned., I should not haye
undertaken a new edition of the S)'riu,c Porta. For
what we Doed for Syriac, as for most other Semitic
)a,obruages, is the investigat.ion of special (lllcstions,
liuguistic, historic ann otber, similar to those which
deL a gar de has given us 011 the figtree and Astarte
or Well h a. use n on the roma.ins of Arabic heathendom,
and not fresh l)resentations of what everybody knows.
Moroover, since the appeara.nce of the first edition
(IS8l), I have coascd to have occasion to lecturo on
Syriac. On the other hand, the spe~dy sale of my
book showed me that it re3.11y supplied a wa.nt, and
accordingly I have done what I could for tho new
edition. Like other parts of the Porta, the Syriac
gt'ammar no longer appears in Latin but in Gorman
and English-which explains the arrangement of the
second half of the book. The part comprising the
GJ'a-mma1', notwjthstanding the :uldition of a. fow obsorvati
