Présentation de l'éditeur :

The centre from which the various branches of the I ndo-E uropean family emigrated is placed by scientists, generally, inC entral A sia, to the north of I ndia. One branch, the A ryans, wended its way from the high plains through the passes of the north-west of I ndia, and settled in the country known as the Punjab, and it is from this ancient race that the Hindus are descended. The earliest known literature of the A ryans has come down to us in the form of a collection of prayers and hymns known as the Rig Veda. These were composed at different periods, and handed down orally from one generation to another until collected together in their present form. In this mass of writing in all there are one thousand and twenty-eight hymns in the Rig Veda are embedded the beliefs, thoughts, manners, and customs of the A ryans, and the collection is interesting if on this account alone.
