It is a translation of a portion of Professor Herrmann's revised edition of Weisbach's work on Engineering Mechanics, which has not before appeared in English. Moreover, it is destined mainly to serve as a textbook for the advanced courses in the Mechanics of Machinery, though it may also prove of value to the practical engineer. Responding to the suggestion made by some critics of the volume on Hoisting Machinery, the translator has undertaken to supplement the text by a few remarks and references respecting some developments in pumping practice since the German original was published, and a few new illustrations of modern types of pumps have been inserted. References in the text to previous volumes of Weisbach's Mechanics allude to the English translations unless otherwise specified. In editing the work, the translator has been greatly aided by having had recourse to notes previously prepared by Professor J. F. Klein of the Lehigh University.
