In this book I have endeavoured to give some account of the physical and social characteristics of Egypt, and to exhibit these characteristics in connection with the work of political reorganization and industrial development which is now in progress. The sketches and the information which I have ventured to present to the reader are the fruits of a visit, undertaken for the purpose, during the winter of 1898-99. In sending this work to the press, I desire to express my thanks to all the many friends who were kind enough to place their information at my disposal, or to assist me in acquiring such information by personal observation.
