By examining critical passages as well as early Christian history, the author examines both the Christian ideal and how that ideal has been corrupted over time, particularly in Western society. Arguing against the idea that female assertiveness is somehow unnatural, the author sets out to defend the idea that women have both a right and a responsibility to fully participate in their own spiritual and intellectual development as those of the male sex. This is shown through examination of the lives of prominent women in the early Christian church. In arguing for female participation, the author makes a strong case for recognizing women's influence and thus the importance of female virtue for society, showing how female piety can affect the world.
