This compilation is a glossary of literary terras. If it is sought to define the exact-sense of literary terms in accordance with which this collection has been made, we may get as near, perhaps, as we are likely to get, by saying that they are such words of specialized or technical meaning as constitute the vocabulary of literature, both in its primary sense of creation and in its subsidiary one of criticism. Of such words there are, broadly speaking, two classes: words belonging to the technology of literature, terms of craft, names of species and classes of literary and semi-literary compositions, phrases and terms of grammar, rhetoric, and prosody, etc., and words belonging to the vocabulary of literary criticism, including movements, periods, influences, schools, styles, virtues and vices, as well as such cant phrases as have received currency or acceptation.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This comprehensive literary compendium compiles a dictionary of literary terms, beginning with the premise that 'literary terms' should be understood as those words of specialized or technical meaning which constitute the vocabulary of literature. The author has consulted no previous work, expressing the belief that this compilation will prove useful to students and readers of literature, both casual and serious. Literary terms are broadly divided into two classes â" those which belong to the technology of literature, comprising terms for species and classes of literary and semi-literary compositions (e.g. phrases and terms of grammar, rhetoric, and prosody) and those belonging to the vocabulary of literary criticism, encompassing movements, periods, influences, schools, styles, virtues and vices. The author notes that the former class of terms is capable of adequate definition, while the latter is naturally intangible, and consequently less suited to clear-cut exposition. While the work is largely focused on the terms of English literature, the author has endeavoured to select foreign terms which shed light on the development of English letters or their comparative study. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
