Thus the conversion of Constantino, the Roman Emperor, in the fourth century, which led to the adoption of Christianity as the national religion instead of Polytheism, entirely changed the existing form and operation of the Gospel. What Rome gained, Christianity seemed to lose. Jesus became but a species of Jove of the Capitol. The sacred ordinances were drowned in heathenish rites.
