Don josé selgas 'y carrasco, poet, novelist, journalist, and member Of the Royal Spanish Acad emy, was born in Lorca, Murcia, in 1824, but passed the greater part of his life in Madrid. While still a young man he published his first book Of poems in 1850 under the title Of La Primavera. This was followed in a few months by another volume Of poems, El Estio, which is now published with La Primavera, the two formi'ng the first volume of his poetical works and Vol. XII Of his collected works. These two volumes brought him to the attention Of the critics Arnao, Cañete and others, who soon assisted the young poet and journalist on the road to popularity.
