Présentation de l'éditeur

Surely no apology is needed for the appearance of this volume. The number of Grieg sadmirers is legion, yet up to the present time there has been no book in English (or even in German) to which they could go for information regarding his life, his personality, and his works. The French have been somewhat more fortunate, for they have had, since 1892, Closson sexcellent brochure; even that, however, has only forty pages about Grieg, with a few paragraphs on his life. Schjelderup sE dvard Grieg og bans Vaerker (1903) exists, so r, only inN orwegian. It devotes much less space to the composers life than to his works, of which it contains some admirable analyses. Grieg himself, although a keen and entertaining writer, has told the pubU cvery little about himself and his works. Brilliant offers for an autobiography have been made him, but, partly from dismclination, partly because of persistent ill-health, he has not accepted them. Letters he has written in abundance; one of his friends, Mr. Feddersen, has over a hundred of them ;but almost the only ones of his letters which have been made public are the few included in this volume. Under these circumstances, and in view of the fact that Gri has led a secluded life in the Far North, it is perhaps not surprising that no elaborate biography has heretofore been attempted. I myself was under the impression, when Mr. Lane first asked me to write this monograph, that it would be a little difficult to find the material for it.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
