Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This volume explores the constraints on the Mississippi River trade route, the Lakes-to-the-Gulf Deep Waterway, in the early 20th century. The author, a political economist and traffic expert, wanted to investigate the economic conditions surrounding the freight movement and rates and their effect on waterway development. The book offers a thorough analysis of the physical characteristics of the Mississippi River Delta; the construction and tonnage of watercraft and boat lines; and the interchange capabilities of river, lake, and ocean vessels at the time of its writing. The author concludes that given the state of boat and railway technology of the time, even were a 14-foot deep channel dredged the entire length of the route, it was improbable that ocean vessels would be brought to Chicago and that transhipment would still be necessary at either New Orleans or Chicago.
