This book was written in 1913, and corrected for press at Lanchou-A i, Kansu, China, during the winter of 1914. The exigencies of war have delayed its appearance ever since, and also even now prohibit such perpetual re-settings of its type as would be necessary to bring it completely abreast of the most recent discoveries and diagnoses. And I particularly regret that the delay in its appearance has outlasted the life of Mr. R. Hooper Pearson, to whom it owes its inception. He died on June 11, 1918, and I wish here to put on record my own special expression of grief and gratitude to one who was always a good friend to me, and, in particular, shouldered the chief burden and labour of producing this book, which, alas I he has not lived to see completed.
