This book is the firsthand account of an expedition by the author to the Antarctic in 1892, which was the first of its kind since the famous expedition under the command of Sir James Ross in 1842. The author, a distinguished naturalist and artist, sailed with three whaling vessels, two of which were fitted with auxiliary steam power. Their main objective was the capture of the Right Whale by old methods from small boats. For three months, they sailed amongst the thick pack ice on the east side of Graham Land, battling through gales and struggling with ice floes.
