My great-grandfather was killed in the Revolution ;my grandfather fought in the War of 1812; my father sacrificed his health in the Civil War; but I, though born in New England, am the first of my family to emigrate to this country the United States of A merica. That sounds like a riddle or a paradox. It isn t; its a plain statement of fact. As a matter of convenience let me call myself Carleton. Ive no desire to make public my life for the sake of notoriety. My only idea in writing these personal details is the hope that they may help some poor devil out of the same hole in which I found myself mired. They are of too sacred a nature to share except impersonally.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book narrates the journey of an immigrant to America in the early twentieth century. Disillusioned with the relentless struggle for survival, the author embarks on a quest for a better life, one that offers opportunities for advancement and financial security. The narrative explores the challenges faced by individuals in the throes of navigating a rigid social hierarchy, where one's age and station in life often determine their prospects. Through the author's experiences, the book raises questions about the nature of the American Dream and the sacrifices one must make to achieve it. Ultimately, the insights shared in this book serve as a poignant reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of hope in the face of adversity.
