Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is an in-depth account of the starry heavens as seen from Earth, taking a descriptive survey of the constellations, clusters, and nebulae visible using popular telescopes of the 19th century. Written towards the end of the reconstruction era of the United States, the book was comprehensive for its time and reflected the growing interest in astronomy in the western world. Notably so, the writer had access to a rare and powerful (for the time) 9.5-inch reflecting telescope, enabling them to describe in detail some of the smaller celestial objects. Packed with more than 800 entries in total, the book provided not only observational descriptions, but also historical and other relevant information on a range of topics including binary stars, nebulae, and more. The book includes observations of not only the visible appearance of these celestial bodies, but also where possible their apparent color, and changes over time due to movements or shifts in appearance. The writer, noted for their sharp eyesight, also includes many of their own observations from many hours spent under the night sky and provides interesting side notes and clarifications as they compare their observations to those of other astronomers, both near contemporary, and historical. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. N° de réf. du vendeur 9781333634483_0
