This book examines the relationship between Chaucer's four dream poemsâ"The Book of the Duchesse, The House of Fame, The Parlement of Foules, and the Prologue to the Legendâ"and the Old French love-vision literature of the 13th and 14th centuries. After providing summaries of Old French love-visions, the author argues that this literary genre, and not dream-visions more broadly, supplied the structure and subject matter of Chaucer's vision poems. He concludes that despite the influence of Old French literary tradition on his work, Chaucer transformed his source material through his own imagination and poetic talent.
