The author uses these to explore the broad themes of the work. Within Inferno, Dante and his guide Virgil encounter various souls suffering eternal torment, with the severity often related to their sin. The author focuses on two tales told by souls within the work. The first is that of Count Guido da Monteferlo, a Ghibelline leader, who deceived Pope Boniface VIII with false counsel. The second is about Buonconte da Monte feltro, Guido's son, who died in battle excommunicated.
